THE FIVE-STORY, BLUE-ROOFED PAGODA , inspired by a 17th-century shrine in Nara,
setsthispavilionapart.Ahillgardenbehinditencompasseswaterfalls,rocks,flowers,
lanterns, paths, and rustic bridges. There are no attractions unless you count the huge
Japaneseretailvenue.Nottobemissed,though,arethe Matsuriza Taiko drummers.
The drums can often be heard throughout the World Showcase, but you need to be up
close to see the graceful way they're played.
Sadly, Miyuki Sugimori, the only woman (and one of only 15 people in the
entire world) trained in the 250-year-old art of candy sculpting, is no longer
entertaining guests in Japan. There seems to be a hit out on performers at
Walt Disney World—the Ziti Sisters in Italy also got the axe in early
2014—and I don't like it one bit.
