In-Depth Information
“You Can't Roller-Skate in a Buffalo Herd”
THIS WAS A SONG TITLE FROM THE 1960s. If we wrote that song today, we'd call it “You
Can't Have Fun at Disney World if You're Drop-Dead Tired.” Believe us, Walt Dis-
ney World is an easy place to be penny-wise and pound-foolish. Many families who
cut lodging expenses by booking a budget hotel end up so far away from Walt Disney
World that it's a major hassle to return to the hotel in the middle of the day for swim-
ming and a nap. By trying to spend the whole day at the theme parks, however, they
wear themselves out quickly, and the dream vacation suddenly disintegrates into short
tempers and exhaustion. And don't confuse this advice with a sales pitch for Disney
hotels. There are, you will find, dozens of hotels outside Disney World that are as
close or closer to certain Disney parks than some of the resorts inside the World. Our
main point—our only point, really—is that you should be able to return to your hotel
easily when the need arises.
THINGS to CONSIDER
COST
AT WALT DISNEY WORLD, STANDARD HOTEL - ROOM RATES range from about $100 to
more than $1,300 per night during the holidays. Outside, rooms are as low as $35
a night. Clearly, if you are willing to sacrifice some luxury and don't mind a 10- to
25-minute commute, you can really cut your lodging costs by staying outside Walt
Disney World. Hotels in the World tend to be the most expensive, but they also offer
some of the highest quality, as well as a number of perks not enjoyed by guests who
stay outside of the World.
