A Viable Research Front
(It is critical to communicate to the institution administrators that the e-portfolio
initiative and a Web portfolio program will be a boost to the school, college,
or university in the way of generating publicity on the Internet and beyond, as
well as providing a highly marketable competitive advantage to their offerings
in the educational marketplace. Obviously, there are great benefits to students.
Web portfolio projects generate research questions and problems that can be
investigated through quantitative and qualitative methods. The growth of
electronic and Web portfolio research will indeed increase as the importance
of having a Web portfolio increases over time. There are great opportunities for
extensive ethnographic research within selected academic disciplines and
social groups on Web portfolio development and publishing activities.)
During my research on this project, I looked at the use of e-portfolios in
academia and found that faculty and students were not public exhibiting a
large number of e-portfolios on the GENERIC University Web site. It is
true that, some departments use e-portfolios and even require them,
however, they are in many cases poorly designed or do not work
properly. A small portion of Faculty member have e-portfolios posted to
the Web, but ultimately, the majority of the Long Island University
community (students and faculty) do not have an e-portfolio posted on the
Internet. I want to work with the GENERIC School faculty and students
to help improve this situation.
There are many obstacles to creating an e-portfolio. For students as well
as faculty, the process can be daunting, often resulting in weak results and
failure. I understand these obstacles and have developed strategies to help
control them. I feel this proposal addresses a great opportunity for Long
Island University and the GENERIC University Campus to build an
effective e-portfolio program and eventually integrate it into the entire
GENERIC Campus population.
Based on the success of other institutions funding their e-portfolio projects
(e.g., LaGuardia Community College), the GENERIC University E-
Portfolio project has exceptional potential to gain grant support. Support
of fund raising activities for the program will be a key objective in the
overall program development.
