FIGURE B.39
Segments of healthcare information factory.
The collective common data model is broken up into some major and distinct sectors. This is an
unusual practice for data modelers because most data models are not broken up into sectors. But most
data models do not address anything as large, diverse, and complex as the healthcare environment.
Figure B.39 shows the different sectors of the healthcare information factory.
The major sectors of the healthcare information factory data model are:
Body parts
Medications
Procedures
Other
As an example of what the high-level data model looks like for one of the sectors, consider the
simple high-level data model shown in Figure B.40 .
The data created for the body parts sector of the collective common data model comes from
procedures, checkups, and other direct medical episodes of care. There is always a patient at the heart
of each of the pieces of information that has been collected. In addition, there is a date associated
with each unit of information. Figure B.41 shows the date component of the information about a body
part.
Because of the needs for privatization, the connector of the information is an anonymous identi-
fier. The anonymous identifier is an encrypted key that is generated at the source layer and can only
be unlocked at the source. In addition, on occasion information will be placed into the database with a
null key. There is limited value to the null data because the data associated with a null identifier can-
not be identified or correlated with other data. But there may be some value of having body data that
has no anonymous identifier attached to it.
Now consider the data found in another sector of the healthcare data model—medication informa-
tion. Medication information is structured somewhat differently than data found in the body sector.
Figure B.42 shows the basic type of information found in the medication sector of the high-level data
model for the collective common data warehouse.
