1997 that there has been a partial reversal of trends in relation
to the northern part of the Aral Sea (the so-called Small Aral),
whereas the processes may be irreversible in relation to the Large
Aral.
It is worth remembering that the precursor of EO, aerial
photography, has had a presence in geographical research
and in the geographical curriculum for a long period of
time, but the power of the new systems and satellite imagery
has moved us to new dimensions. GIS and EO are strongly
technological in their make-up but around that technology
have developed powerful models, processes for analysing
data, and methods of interpretation. They are both massively
effective information-gathering procedures, but the value of this
information is only realized when good interpretation is able to
make the most effective use of it.
