JPEG Options determine the
amount of compression used and
how the image will be displayed.
For most images,I recommend a
setting of 7 or 8.
The other option for JPEG is Save For Web (File > Save For Web). Save For Web
gives you a side-by-side preview of the image before and after compression. It also lets
you resize images (Figure 7.17). Save For Web is designed to work with files that are
sized for screen use. Trying to use Save For Web with a full-size image may give you a
warning message about low memory and slow performance. I've never had Photoshop
crash because of this, but when they say slow performance, they mean it! If you see this
message when selecting Save For Web, click No and resize the image. Alternatively, just
use Save As and select JPEG.

Save For Web offers a number of
features for saving as JPEG,
including the option to resize
images and see a before and
after preview.
Note: For detailed guidelines on saving images for multiple uses, I recommend my previous topic,
Photo Finish, also by Sybex.
