The Image Analysis of the Level of a Fabric's Hairiness
and Pilling Based on Matlab

Abstract. The abrasion resistance of shell fabric is one of the most important
performance indexes of quality evaluation. The evaluation of level of fabric hai-
riness and pilling is usually confined to manual methods. This paper has studied
the hairiness and pilling of shell fabric on the base of MATLAB. A series image
analysis steps include image preprocessing, eigenvalue calculation and level
judgment. Level critical value can be worked out by computer after the percen-
tage of pilling part is calculated. Test shows that the process of this paper is
practical and effective.

1 Introduction
Nowadays, the increasingly high demand for the level of quality of life, aesthetics and
comfort of the clothes become more and more important. A good clothes that has hair
bulbs on the surface, not only affects the visual appearance, but also people looked
uncomfortable and affect mood.
The durability of the fabric is the fabric to resist damage caused by various factors
(mechanical, physical, chemical and microbiological) combined effects of perfor-
mance under the conditions of use. Fabric in the course of damage, but in practice
prove the wear and tear damage to one of the main characteristics of the fabric to
resist wear and tear is hairiness and pilling, and the impact causes of fabric hairiness
and pilling played a decisive role composition of the fibers of the fabric characteris-
tics,structure and finishing.
The reserch on fabric hairiness and pilling is limited, it has a prospect of a large
space. Using MATLAB image assessment level early pretreatment optimization (in-
cluding cut-off including Figure, gray, wavelet filtering, noise removal, black and
white, binarization, median filtering), re-use ratio in mathematics on from the area
ratio of the ball part of the calculations and comparisons to obtain the cut-off value
between each level, the final assessment of the level of the fabric pilling.
