In-Depth Information
setting complete with Animatronic animals that rival some of Disney's best. T-REX is sim-
ilar, but with a dinosaur theme. We give the nod to T-REX, partly because it's more likely
to be new to a visitor (there are only two locations worldwide) but also because the food
and drinks are slightly more inspired. Rainforest, however, is fun and less intimidating for
some youngsters than T-REX.
VISITING DOWNTOWN DISNEY . A visit to Downtown Disney is not an essential part of a first
vacation, particularly with all the other things to do at Disney World. Ongoing construction
walls and machinery detract from the experience and make travel more difficult. If you do
go, plan a single afternoon or evening in DTD perusing the shops and grabbing a meal.
Crowds are considerably lower in the afternoon. If you arrive after 5pm, don't expect to eat
without very long waits unless you have secured a dinner reservation.
DTD is served by buses to and from the Disney resort hotels (but not to and from the
parks). These buses are slow and can have many stops, so allow more time than you'd
think. DTD is also served by slow, low-capacity boats from the Port Orleans resorts, Old
Key West, and Saratoga Springs, and there's a walking path from Saratoga Springs.
Driving to DTD after 5pm is often arduous as Disney expands Buena Vista Drive, the
road that surrounds Downtown Disney, to ten lanes. Parking is complimentary in the gar-
age or in one of the lots that surround the complex. Unfortunately, driving your vehicle
and relying on Disney transportation both suffer from their own set of problems. Driving
is often stop and go in the evening. Disney transportation often stops at Typhoon Lagoon
on the way, in addition to taking indirect routes to keep buses off the main roadways, both
of which add transit time. Our recommendation is to rely on Disney transportation, partic-
ularly if you can take the watercraft from Port Orleans, Old Key West, or Saratoga Springs.
