It's Tough to Be a Bug
Minor attraction. EMH
Morning. FP+
Yes. Low priority. TYPE
4D Show.
RANKING
REQUIREMENTS None.
WHAT TO EXPECT The theater is dark, loud, and there are a number of effects that “add” to
the experience. Otherwise, It's Tough to Be a Bug is a fun 3D theater show (in-theater spe-
cial effects make it “4D”) based on It's a Bugs Life that most guests enjoy. SCARY FACTOR
(with minor spoilers) Low for those 12 and older, but it may frighten younger kids. Animatronic
spiders, termites, beetles, hornets, and more make appearances; several effects add to the
anxiety: smoke, a “sting” from the back of the seat, insects dropping from the ceiling, and
the sensation that bugs are running under your feet. If you're scared of bugs, this show may
not be for you. At the same time, all of the bugs are “cartoony” like in the movie and not
particularly realistic.
WHEN TO GO Afternoon when crowds have peaked elsewhere. EXPECT TO WAIT Only as long
as it takes for the next show to start. LENGTH 8 minutes. WHERE TO SIT Target the back few
rows and let guests fill about half the row before entering. With apprehensive kids, instead
sit at the end of a row for an easy exit.
Africa
Home to Kilimanjaro Safaris, Festival of the Lion King, Pangani Forest Exploration Trail,
and the Wildlife Express Train to Rafiki's Planet Watch, Africa is Animal Kingdom's
largest, and arguably most immersive, land. Guests enter through Harambe, a rural African
marketplace surrounded by buildings inspired by the ones Disney Imagineers saw during
their travels across the continent. You'll see everything from a fortress reminiscent of Zan-
zibar to thatched huts built by the Zulu in South Africa.
Tusker House Restaurant (a Mickey-hosted character meal), Harambe Popcorn, Dawa
Bar, and Tamu Tamu Refreshments are the first buildings guests see as they cross the bridge
over to Africa. Farther back, Mombasa Marketplace is the large store on the right, offer-
ing authentic African crafts, Animal Kingdom merchandise, and African wines. Kusafiri
Bakery is on the left with Harambe Market a bit farther up on the right. Both serve drinks,
treats, snacks, and the like. The entrance to Kilimanjaro Safaris is straight back with the
entrance to Pangani Forest Exploration Trail around to the right near the Wildlife Express
Train station. If you're interested in food and drink, stick to the front half of Africa. For the
attractions, continue to the back.
