Figure 15.4 Napoleon's campaign to Moscow in a space-time cube. Napoleon's campaign as pre-
sented by Minard (a), has been converted into a space-time cube (b). The path's thickness corre-
sponds to the number of troops. In (c) a detail of the campaign, the crossing of the Berezina River,
is shown. The base map of the cube is moved to 26 November, and next to the path representing
the French troops, two paths of the Russian troops are shown closing in on the French. In (d) the
effect of the terrain is shown by replacing the base map with a terrain model
The cube detail shown in Figure 15.4(c) represents the situation on 26 November, the
moment of the crossing of the Berezina River. The cube's base map, showing some topo-
graphic detail, has been moved along the time axis to this moment in time. Multiple paths
are visible. The blue path, popping out of the river, represents the French troops. Both the
red paths represent the Russian troops closing in on Napoleon. In the cube in Figure 15.4(d)
the base map has been replaced with a terrain model to show the influence of the terrain on
the movement of the troops. This model can be moved along the time axis just like the base
map.
