classifications of remotely sensed images. In the case of Leitner and Buttenfield (2000),
specific focus was on the alteration of the decision-making process by changing the repre-
sentation, altering Bertin's visual variables systematically. In these cases, important insight
for designing uncertainty representations was gained, but the influence of user diversity in
the design of the representation was not a particular research focus.
However, research into uncertainty visualization in geography has also, on occasion,
considered the influence of the user's experience and comfort with uncertainty as an
