In-Depth Information
information, or always operates to make people ever more unequal is yet to be seen. The
vast majority of the royalties secured by sales made on the internet result in money flowing
back to the triad, so the story so far is that more equitable access to the net is leading to a
yet more inequitable global distribution of wealth.
Text Box 5.30: Internet Users 1990
In 1990 the World Wide Web was a new idea, and only 3 million people used it
worldwide; 77% of these people were living in North America - most lived in the
United States.
Other Internet users of 1990 lived in just a few of the other territories, these were:
the UK, France, Spain, Switzerland (home to CERN where the program that formed
the conceptual basis of the World Wide Web was written), Italy, Germany, Belgium,
the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Taiwan, Republic of
Korea, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Japan and Australia.
It is my belief that universal access to basic communication and information
services is a fundamental human right

5.2.30 Internet use 2002
Although when compared with Figure 5.32, Figure 5.33 shows the scope of the web spreading,
it is spreading far from evenly. Compare how much more growth there has been in China than
India, and perhaps compare that change with the relative sizes of the female service sector
Figure 5.33 Territory size shows the proportion of worldwide Internet users who lived there in
2002 (Worldmapper Map 336)
