Torch and Book
The new torch, with its 24-carat gold leaf-coated flame, was added during a 1984-6
restoration. Theoriginal isondisplay in themain lobby.Thebookin thestatue's left
hand is inscribed July 4, 1776, in Roman numerals.
Frame
GustaveEiffel,bestknownforhisParistower,createdtheinnerframework.Thecop-
per sheeting shell, weighing 31 tons, is hung on bars from a massive central iron
pylon that anchors the statue to the base.
Views
The observation decks in the pedestal and crown of the Liberty Statue offer spectac-
ularviewsofManhattan.Thecrownreopenedtolimitednumbersofvisitorsin2009
following its closure due to the events of September 11.
Historical Exhibits
ThemuseuminsidethebasedocumentsthecompletehistoryoftheStatueofLiberty
using photos, prints, videos, oral histories, and fullscale replicas oftheface and foot.
A pass is required to visit the base and observation platform.
Tip: An early departure or an advance, timed booking is advised, to avoid long lines.
Tip: For the best photos, sit on the right of the boat going out, the left coming back.
