Label Standards for Automated Mailing (United States)
bulk mailing of envelopes, postcards, and flats can be discounted if they are prepared
according to USPS automation standards. Pieces qualifying for automation rates need
to meet specific addressing, bar coding, and design standards.
Bar codes: To receive automation rates for
cards letters, as well as bulk discounts
for parcel post, bound printed matter,
and media mail, all the pieces in a mail-
ing must have a delivery point bar code.
Automation rate flats must have a delivery
point bar code or a ZIP + four bar code.
each piece in a bar coded parcel mailing
must have a five-digit bar code. All bar
codes must meet placement, size, and
legibility standards. Software is available
for printing bar coded address labels from
a mailing list.

Address printing: Dark, nonmetallic ink
colors must be printed against a white
or pastel background to provide adequate
print contrast between the printed
address and its background. If necessary,
areas of dark solid color on a mail piece
must be left color free in the address
area. To prevent smearing of printed
addresses, the USPS recommends using
quick-drying inks on a paper stock with
a low-gloss surface. If gloss varnish is
applied, a varnish-free zone should be
reserved for the address area. Addresses
should be not be slanted (or skewed)
more than 5 degrees relative to the bot-
tom edge of the mail piece.
