PBDE.contamination.hotspots.in.China:.(A).air,.(B).sediment,.(C).ish.tissue,.(D).human.tissue,.
and.(E).seawater.column.
PBDEs.are.known.to.be.endocrine.disruptors,.which.destroy.thyroid.hor-
mone.balance,.impose.neurodevelopmental.deicits.and.reproductive.devel-
opmental.toxicity,.and.even.cause.cancer..The.concentrations.of.ΣPBDEs.in.
air,.sediment,.soil,.ish,.and.human.tissues.from.Guiyu,.the.most.intensive.
e-waste. site,. were. the. highest. among. the. 12. large-scale. e-waste. recycling.
sites.in.China..There.seems.to.be.suficient.evidence.showing.bioaccumula-
tion.and.biomagniications.of.PBDEs.in.some.of.these.sites,.leading.to.very.
high.concentrations.in.human.tissues,.particularly.in.cancer.patients.
Due. to. rapid. industrialization. and. modernization,. large. amounts. of.
PBDEs.have.been.produced.and.used.in.China..Apart.from.those.industrial.
hotspots,.it.is.envisaged.that.emission.of.PBDEs.into.air.from.electrical.and.
electronic. equipment. used. in.ofices.and.homes.is.fast.becoming.a.serious.
problem.in.China,.especially.because.these.products.are.now.gaining.popu-
larity.in.villages.and.more.remote.areas..Therefore,.there.is.an.urgent.need.
to.address.these.pressing.issues.related.to.PBDEs.
