6.2 Mist
Mist settings allow you to introduce a mist or fog eff ect to your scene (Figure 6.3). To see the
mist eff ect, “Mist” must be checked in the “World” button - “Mist” tab and the “Intensity”
value must be set.

6.4 Texture as Background
Blender's built-in textures can be used to create a background for your scene. Th e following
demonstration will show you how, but you will soon realize that there are many combina-
tions of settings to experiment with. It is a good idea to search the internet and fi nd tutorials
showing how to achieve specifi c eff ects, but remember that the eff ects have probably been
derived by experimentation.
Begin with the default Blender scene containing the cube object. You can leave the cube
selected since the texture we will be applying will aff ect the scene background and not the
cube. Remember that textures do not display in the 3D window; you have to render an im-
age to see them. To make life a little simpler, divide the screen as shown in Figure 6.6.
By default, the properties window displays with the “Render” buttons active. In your
setup, make one copy of the properties with the “World” buttons active and the other with
the “Texture” buttons active. Th e “Texture” buttons should be in world texture mode. Th is
setup will allow you to see a preview of your background texture without rendering an im-
age in the 3D window every time you change a setting. Th e preview only gives an indication
of the render and you will have to render an image to see the true result; note the diff erence
in the diagram.
