Cyclone Nargis tears across the delta, killing an estimated 138,000 and leaving many more

NLD boycott the October elections but many other parties decide to take part; few are sur-

Clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in Rakhine State leave hundreds dead and tens of
thousands of Rohingya displaced.
2013
On a visit to the US, Thein Sein is praised by President Obama for 'leading Mynamar in a new
direction. Inter-ethnic tensions continue with deadly clashes spreading to central Myanmar.
