WORTH A TRIP
DAY TRIPS FROM SITTWE
Have a day to spare? Consider taking one of the following boat trips. The most po-
tentially interesting is to the weaving village Wabo , a 90-minute boat ride from Sit-
twe, where you can see Rakhine-style longyibeing made; the Rakhine are known in
Myanmar as skilled weavers who can produce intricate designs in their cloths. The
other is to hilly Baronga Island , across the wide Kaladan River, to see a typical fish-
ing village. Boat hire to either will run about K60,000, and you'll also need a guide,
such as Sittwe-based Naing Naing ( 09 4217 46111; mr.theinnaing.f4@gmail.com ) , to ar-
range and lead your trip (per day $15).
Festivals & Events
The Rakhine State Day (a Saturday in mid-December) is staged at Lokananda Paya,
with traditional wrestling, bamboo pole climbing and tug-of-war.
Sleeping
At Sittwe's budget options, all of which could use some TLC, electricity runs from about
6pm to 11pm. The midrange options generally include round-the-clock generators.
