be said that the high-season rates are asking a bit much.

'house on the beach' feel, the 20-room Laguna, run by a German chef, goes rustic with
dark-wood, open-shuttered windows and huge balconies. Mosquito nets hang over the
big beds and a giant circular window in the bathrooms provides views through your room
to the beach.

The beachfront rooms at this longstanding budget/midrange place can't be described as
sexy or new, but they are spacious and comfortable, and are located steps from a particu-
larly rocky and scenic strip of beach. Cheaper rooms without sea views - Ngapali's only
real budget option - offer only a bed, a cold-water shower and a fan. Power is available
from 6pm to 6am.

When we stopped by, furious construction meant that the 31 rooms at this midrange-feel-
ing place were a rather eclectic mix of new and old duplex bungalows, the former the
more desirable with minibar, a TV and air-con. Electricity is on from 6pm to 6am.
Silver Beach Hotel HOTEL $$$

( 043-42652, in Yangon 01-381 898; www.silverbeachngapali.com ; Ngapali Rd; r/ste $100/150;
) At the beach's north end, Silver Beach is the cheapest way to go for 24-hour elec-
tricity. The prim, red-roofed duplex cottages conjure up the look of a 1950s British holi-
day camp, with dated furnishings and facilities to match.
