RAKHINE STATE
The interchangeable terms Rakhine (sometimes spelled Rakhaing) and Arakan refer to
the people, the state and dialect of Myanmar's westernmost state. Isolated from the
Burmese heartland, but in an ancient crossroad that has been the seat of at least four
kingdoms, and home to a geography that spans both mountains and coastline, it's not a
surprise that the inhabitants of Rakhine State remain staunchly proud of their unique
identity.
TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS
Much of Rakhine State is now open to foreign independent travellers, although the
southern half of the state is the only part that foreign tourists can reach by bus, as
well as by air. The northern part of the state, home to the capital Sittwe, must be
accessed by air or boat.
