Budgeting
Having decided on all the transport and accommodation options, you'll be in a position
to budget more accurately for your trip.
In Myanmar, in the vast majority of cases, you'll be paying for everything in cash -
either US$ or the local currency, kyat. If you're dealing with a travel agent you can usu-
ally pay in advance for some of your expenses (hotels, transport), on top of which a pro-
cessing fee of around 5% may be charged.
Only brand new greenbacks - bills from 2006 or later that are in absolutely perfect
condition, ie with no folds, stamps, stains, writing or tears - will be accepted for payment
or exchanged for kyat. Keep them in a flat wallet as you travel.
ATMs accepting international cards are becoming more common, and a few places
such as hotels, major tourist restaurants and shops now take credit cards. But with dodgy
power supplies and telecommunications, such electronic means of payment cannot be
guaranteed - so come prepared with plenty of cash.
