Eating
There's a popular beer station on the short diagonal street cutting behind the Friendship
Hotel (fine for football-watching), basic teahouses along the riverfront, and a cafe at-
tached to the Hotel Paradise that is good for coffee and smoothies.
Shamie Restaurant BURMESE $
(Mingone Junction; curries K2000; 7am-10pm) Excellent spot for proper curry spreads,
with eight different types available (including beef, a rarity in Buddhist Myanmar). They
come with rice and veggies and fantastic home-made tamarind chutney.
Sein Sein CHINESE $
(Kannar Rd; mains from K2000; 9am-9pm; ) The rough round tables and beer-poster
decor promise little. But the reliable Chinese food is considered the best in town and
there's draught Dagon beer (K500). It's near the IWT office.
Sut Ngai KACHIN $
(Sinbyushin St; mains from K1500; 9am-9pm) Popular with the locals, there's fine barbe-
cue, as well as Kachin specialities like lime-flavoured pork served in a banana leaf and
draft Tiger beer (K700). No English spoken; point at what others are eating.
GETTING TO CHINA: MU-SE TO RUILI
At the time of writing, it was expected that sometime in 2014 Mu-se-Ruili would
become a permit-free, standard border crossing, making it much easier to travel to
China. Check the current situation before you depart.
Getting to the border While no documents are required to travel to Mu-se itself,
people planning to cross the border need a permit (which takes two weeks to ar-
range through Myanmar Tours & Travel), and a pre-booked guide and car ($200) to
make the four-hour journey from Lashio to Mu-se.
At the border You must have a Chinese visa already; they are not available at the
border.
Moving on From Ruili, four buses run daily to Yunnan's capital Kunming (14 hours).
