Family-run and friendly, but also basic and rather rundown. The wood-panelled rooms
are box-like with concrete floors and lumpy beds, while the shared bathrooms are down-
stairs and across the yard.

tiny. But they're clean and so are the shared bathrooms located outside.
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
MOGOK
Long closed to foreigners, the ruby-mining town of Mogok is now open. With 90%
of the world's rubies coming from Myanmar, Mogok and the surrounding area is a
key hub of the ruby trade, with much of the mining done by hand.
As well as rubies, you'll find blue sapphires and lapis lazuli and other semi-pre-
cious gems on sale in the markets. Many of the traders are Chinese or Indian. If
you're interested in purchasing any stones be sure you know what you are doing;
this isn't a place for rookie gem-buyers.
In addition to rubies, Mogok has a significant Shan population, as well as
Palaung and Lisu. There are a number of eye-catching pagodas and a WWII
cemetery containing the remains of British soldiers who died fighting nearby.
Although Mogok is 110km northwest of Kyaukme along a rough road, at the mo-
