Midrange & Top-End Hotels
Upper-midrange and top-end hotels may be owned and run by various local entrepren-
eurs and/or foreign companies. Some are former government hotels now leased to local
owners. Some owners are part of Myanmar's growing middle class and aren't linked
with the former government. Conversely, other owners are members of the generals'
families or cronies of the military - for example, the owners of the Aureum Palace and
Myanmar Treasure chains.
If you're concerned about a hotel's ownership make pre-trip enquiries. Also ask about
things such as employment practices and whether funds are provided for community pro-
jects and local charities.
Transport Options
Online booking of flights is possible, and a good idea if you want to secure seats during
the busy high season. Bear in mind, though, that Myanmar's domestic airline industry
can become overstretched at peak times and that delays and changes to flight times need
to be taken in one's stride.

Train
Train travel in Myanmar is an experience (not always a good one!) but does have its fans.
Take note of the following:
» Myanmar Railways (MR) does not currently offer online bookings.
» Travel agencies can sort out tickets for you (recommended particularly outside of Yan-
gon and other major cities) but may only be able do so a few days in advance of travel.
» Payment by non-Myanmar citizens for tickets at stations must be in US dollars.
» Do not take a train if you are on a tight travel schedule - they are notorious for long
delays.
» Be prepared for some discomfort on the journey as carriages rock and roll on the narrow
gauge tracks.
