BUDDHIST STUPA

GOOGLE MAP
This vast bell-shaped pagoda, erected by King Bagyidaw in 1820, is the tallest
structure for miles around (185ft). It's still slightly damaged from the 2012 earthquake,
but once repairs are complete men (only!) should once again be allowed to climb half-
way to the upper terrace to appreciate views over the plethora of
hti
(stupa pinnacles)
glittering through Amarapura's lush treescape.

STUPA
(Kanthitan St)
Attractive 19th-century square-based stupa with gold spire and white/ice-
blue lower sections from a 2006 makeover. It's set in a nursery of flowering shrubs be-
side the lake-road.

BUDDHA MUSEUM
(admission by combo ticket)
If you're trying to squeeze full value out of your Mandalay
'combo' ticket, you might head to this 1996 concrete-pillared reconstruction of an
early-19th-century monastery. It has plenty of flying wooden filigree roofwork and con-
tains a substantial ancient library of Pali scripts, plus a museum of 19th-century Buddha
images, but few travellers are greatly impressed. Nearby there are several distinctive
to-
bacco drying barns
, a fascinating little
foundry
where giant woks are cast, and, further
east, the hefty but forgettable ruins of two former
palace
buildings.
