It's hard to do better for
Burmese cuisine than with Green Elephant's attractively presented multi-dish set menus.
While these are aimed at tour groups, individuals can usually get a slightly adapted ver-
sion on request. Ours featured six dishes, including tasty roast-aubergine salad and a
scrumptiously tangy mango-pork curry - one of our best meals in Myanmar.
Service is very obliging and a few tables are tucked within an air-conditioned Pyin Oo
Lwin-style colonial-era building full of period relics (ask). Others spill out into a
bamboo-tufted garden lit by lanterns and a less impressive pavilion space beside it.

Twanging country music, red 'leather' booth-seats and classic vin-
tage signs add to the feeling of a comfortable, latter-day American diner. The menu
ranges from steaks and English triangular sandwiches to 'lobster' and delicious coconut-
basted fish kebabs. Oh, and its coffee is possibly Mandalay's best (espresso K1900). It's
popular with wealthy local families.

This spacious,
gently buzzing lounge-style cafe-restaurant is set behind palms, alluringly lit at night.
The predominantly Western menu includes quesadillas, Russian salad, pasta, steak and
some brilliantly imaginative sauce flavour combinations like lime-caper-butter, spicy
raisin-orange or garlic-mint. There's coffee (K1500 to K2500) and cocktails (K2500 to
K6000).
