Handily placed in beautifully manicured jungle at the base of Mandalay
Hill, the city's best resort hotel has an outdoor pool and a breathtaking spa area that feels
like an Indiana Jones treasure trove.
'Superior' guest rooms are classy yet cosy with watercolours, mirrors, embroidered
bed-throws and nozzle-style reading lamps. 'Deluxe' versions are very slightly larger,
with hill views. Discount rates are available, depending on occupancy. The $1200 spa
villas are dazzling feats of the ultra-exotic.

Neotraditional roof gables make this intimate 26-room hotel feel like a cosy
oriental palace. Teak floorboards, toiletries in potion bottles, tasteful Asian knick-knacks
and little extras like tea-time snacks and complimentary cocktail hour add to the keen
service. An artificial stream gurgles past the best 'Chin' rooms. Slightly less pricey
'Kachin' rooms compensate for low natural light with tropical outdoor showers.
'Rakhine' rooms lack balconies. All in all it's a lovely place but the high-season prices
seem extremely steep. Look for online bargains.
