Moving on Mae Sai's bus station is 1.5km from the border; pick-ups ply the route
between the bus station and Soi 2, Th Phahonyothin (15B, five minutes, from 6am
to 9pm). Alternatively, it's a 50B motorcycle taxi ride to/from the stand at the
corner of Th Phahonyothin and Soi 4. From Mae Sai, major bus destinations in-
clude Bangkok (673B to 943B, 12 hours, frequent from 4pm to 5.45pm), Chiang
Mai (182B to 364B, five hours, nine departures from 6.15am to 4.30pm) and Chi-
ang Rai (39B to 69B, 1½ hours, frequent from 5.45am to 6pm). For further inform-

Min Ma Haw GUESTHOUSE $

bare, although some of the larger ones have en suite bathroom, TV and fridge. The air-
con rooms are bigger and better, but not great.
Nan Ayar Inn GUESTHOUSE $
( 083-21306; Nat Thying Naung Rd; r $15-35) Simple but homey-feeling rooms in a bright
green house by the river.
Moon Joy Inn HOTEL $
( 083-21618; 4 Thiri Rd; r K10,000-30,000; ) The 'econ' rooms in this unmissable
purple house share bathrooms, while the more expensive have en suite, air-con and
fridge.
Hotel Loikaw HOTEL $$$
( 083-22946; www.hotelloikaw.com ; 9 St; r $65-85; ) Loikaw's fanciest hotel is this
new-feeling compound of rather flashy duplex bungalows that house 25 comparatively
plain (but large) rooms. A five-storey annexe was being built when we were in town. In-
conveniently located a long walk north of 'downtown' Loikaw.
