Tachileik
084 / POPULATION C20,000
Facing the town of Mae Sai across the Thai-Myanmar border, this hectic town is like
border towns all over Asia - it's a border post and a magnet for black-market goods, with
not much else to offer.
If you're stuck overnight in Tachileik, River Side Hotel (
084-51161; r 700-900B;
)
is acceptable, but accommodation on the Thai side is better in every respect; the Khan-
thongkham Hotel ( 0 5373 4222; www.kthotel.com ; 7 Th Phahonyothin; r incl breakfast
800-900B, ste incl breakfast 1200-1650B;
) , near the border in Mae Sai, is recommen-
ded.
TRANSPORT TO/FROM TACHILEIK
Buses and vans (share taxis) depart from Tachileik's bus station, 2km and a 20 baht (B)
truck ride or a K1500/50B motorcycle taxi ride from the border. At research time, a new
bus station, a couple miles beyond the present one, was under construction.
