KYAINGTONG & BORDER AREAS
Beyond Taunggyi, the landscape rucks up into great folds, cloaked in dense forest and
cut by rushing mountain rivers. This is the heartland of the Golden Triangle, where the
opium trade formerly flourished and insurgent armies battled for independence for most
of the last century. Ceasefires with the main rebel groups have largely allowed the region
to move out of the shadow of civil war, but drug trafficking and other illegal activities
are common, and travel to the border areas is still largely subject to confusing
government-imposed travel restrictions.
