In-Depth Information
Kyan Lite Restaurant CHINESE-BURMESE $
(Zaw Ti Kar Yone St; mains from K1000; 10am-9pm) On the lakeshore close to the market,
Kyan Lite serves cold beers and a familiar menu of Myanmar Chinese dishes.
Green Tea Restaurant INTERNATIONAL, BURMESE $$$
(Shwe U Min Pagoda Rd; mains K1800-8200; 10am-9pm; ) Located between the market
and Shwe Oo Min Pagoda, this open-air dining room looking over Pone Taloke Lake is
Pindaya's poshest place to dine. The dishes don't quite live up to the setting, although the
Burmese food is OK for a restaurant of this type.
Information
We're told that there is a $2 'entry fee' to Pindaya, collected at the entrance to town, al-
though we've never been hit up for this.
There was no ATM nor currency exchange in Pindaya at research time, so bring cash.
Net Villa (Zay Part St; per hr K400; 1-11pm) At research time, Pindaya's only internet
cafe. A bit tricky to find; U Myint Thoung at Old Home Tour Information Centre can
probably show the way.
Old Home Tour Information Centre ( 081-66104, 081-66188; 46 Shwe U Min Pagoda Rd;
9am-5pm) Located at the market intersection. Here you'll find friendly local U Myint
Thoung, who sells a small selection of books and antiques, and who leads treks and day
tours.
Getting There & Away
There's very little direct transport to Pindaya, so you'll probably have to make your way
to Aungban, a few miles east of Kalaw along NH4, where transport to Pindaya waits near
the clock tower intersection. There, you'll find two daily pick-ups (K1000 to K2000, 1½
hours, 8am and 11am), as well as waiting motorcycles (K6000 one way, K10,000 round-
trip) and taxis (K30,000 one way, K50,000 round-trip).
From Pindaya's market intersection, minibuses bound for Taunggyi depart at 5.30am
and 5.45am (K2000 to K3000, three hours), as well as seriously overpacked pick-ups to
Aungban at 9am, 9.30am and 12.30pm (K1000, 1½ hours).
