In-Depth Information
(Museum Rd (Haw St); admission $2 or K2000; 10am-4pm Tue-Sun) This equal parts impos-
ing and crumbling structure is the former haw (palace) of the last Shan sao pha (sky
lord), Sao Shwe Thaike, who briefly served as the first president of Independent Burma.
Today, the mostly empty building holds a few dusty displays and is worth visiting more
for the stately brick-and-teak structure itself than any educational summary of Shan cul-
ture or history.
Mingala Market MARKET

(Yone Gyi Rd; 5am-2pm) This busy market at the entrance to town is flooded with locals
every morning, when traders from the lake bring in fresh fish and produce from the float-
ing gardens. The market doubles in size when it hosts the five-day rotating market.
Red Mountain Estate WINERY
( www.redmountain-estate.com ; 9am-4pm) This winery, located in a valley within
cycling distance from Nyaungshwe, is open daily for tastings (K2000 for four wines).
Other Religious Monuments
There are stupas and monasteries all over Nyaungshwe. Most of the latter are clustered
around the Mong Li Canal, southeast of the market.
About a mile and a half north of town on the road to Shwenyaung, Shwe Yaunghwe
Kyaung ( daylight hours) is probably the most photographed monastery in
Nyaungshwe: the unique oval windows in the ancient teak thein (ordination hall) create a
perfect frame for portraits of the novices.
South of Nyaungshwe in the village of Nanthe, Yan Aung Nan Aung Hsu Taung Pye
Paya ( daylight hours) features a 26ft-high sitting buddha surrounded by stucco
deva (celestial beings) and chinthe (half-lion, half-dragon guardians). Although heavily
restored, the statue is said to be more than 700 years old.
