French woman and her Burmese husband, this garden cafe and restaurant is something of
an oasis. It's a lovely place to relax over a decent steak-frites, a well-made espresso or a
delicious homemade ice cream. Service is friendly but leisurely.
Red Pepper THAI, EUROPEAN $$$

6-10pm) Serving a broad range of Thai dishes, freshly made with an authentic spicy kick,
this relaxed venue takes a stab at sophistication with silky pillows on concrete benches in
a courtyard facing the main road. It had just reopened following a renovation during our
visit.
Beach Bagan Restaurant & Bar PAN-ASIAN $$$

8am-9pm) Signs lead past backstreets from the Nyaung U market to this slick, breezy spot
with plenty of parking space for tour buses. The restaurant overlooking the river has
wicker chairs and offers Thai, Chinese and Myanmar dishes. Try the roof-top bar for a
sunset cocktail, with a happy hour from 4pm to 6pm.
Hti BAR

(5 Thiripyitsaya; 5-10pm) One of Nyaung U's only real bars, Hti is the Burmese name
for parasol, and this certainly puts most other would-be bars in the shade. The cocktail
list is impressive and food is available including Asian and international dishes, plus a
barbecue grill. Shishas on demand.

There is a good selection of souvenirs at the Thanakha Gallery ( Click here ) and at shops
along Restaurant Row.
