A virtual time capsule, the former capital of British Burma Mawlamyine

) has changed little since the colonial era, and its busy harbour,
antique buildings, hill-top temples and imposing churches fool visitors into believ-
ing that Kipling and Orwell never left town. Even if you're not interested in history,
the attractions surrounding Mawlamyine, with destinations ranging from tropical
islands to deep caves, not to mention the area's unique Mon culture, are strong
draws, yet like the city itself they see few visitors.
