Sights
With a temple-capped hill at its back, a wide harbour at its breast, and a hilly island op-
posite, Myeik is one of Myanmar's more handsome towns. The town's history has also
led to a palpable multicultural feel, and even today, there are still distinct Muslim,
Chinese and Catholic quarters.
Despite a 1989 fire that destroyed as many as 3900 buildings, Myeik remains home to
some beautiful classic architecture, much of it allegedly haunted. Crumbling Chinese-
style godowns line parts of Strand Rd, several grand shophouses can be found in the
blocks that surround Sake Nyein Zei, and some beautiful old Sino-Portuguese mansions
can be found along S.H.S. (2) St, east of Assumption Church.
