GETTING TO THAILAND: MYAWADDY TO MAE SOT
In 2013, the Friendship Bridge linking Myawaddy and Mae Sot, in northern Thail-
and's Tak Province, became one of three newly opened land borders between the
two countries. Regardless of where or how you entered Myanmar, you can exit the
country here. Likewise, if you've already procured a Myanmar visa in Bangkok or
elsewhere, you're free to cross here and proceed to other destinations in Myanmar.
However it's important to understand that, if you're crossing here from Thailand,
a Myanmar visa is notavailable at the border; this must be obtained in advance. It's
also worth noting that in the recent past fighting between the Myanmar Armed
Forces and splinter groups of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) has
occasionally led to this border being closed. Be sure to check the situation before
you cross here.
Getting to the border Vans (share taxis) and buses linking Myawaddy with Hpa-an,
Mawlamyine and Yangon terminate a short walk from the Friendship Bridge.
At the border The Myanmar immigration office ( 058-50100; AH1, Myawaddy;
6am-6pm) is at the foot of the Friendship Bridge. After walking across the 420m
bridge, if you don't already have a visa, the Thai Immigration office (
055 56 3004;
AH1, Mae Sot;
6.30am-6.30pm) will grant you permission to stay in Thailand up to
15 days.
