TOP OF CHAPTER
Around Hpa-an
The real highlights of Hpa-an are all scattered about the divine rural countryside out of
town. While many of these sights are potentially accessible by public transport, you'd
need to devote several days to them and be prepared to give your leg muscles a workout.
Therefore, almost everyone takes a motorbike (or thoun bein, motorised trishaw) tour or-
ganised by the Soe Brothers Guesthouse, which circumnavigates Mt Zwegabin, stopping
at all of the sights mentioned here. A full-day tour costs K30,000 per vehicle (up to six
passengers), while a half-day tour, hitting destinations of your choice, runs from K15,000
to K20,000.
Some of the closer attractions can also be reached by bicycle. Bikes (per day K2000)
and motorcycles (per day K8000) can be rented at Soe Brothers, who have also put to-
gether a good map of the surrounding area and its attractions. At press time, Khiri Travel
( Click here ) were planning to offer kayaking excursions in the wetlands around Hpa-an;
check the website to see if their Hpa-an branch has opened by the time you're in town.
Sights & Activities
Kaw Ka Thawng Cave CAVE
( daylight hours) More popular among locals than travellers, this area actually
consists of three caves, only two of which are generally open to the public.
Kaw Ka Thawng Cave is about 7 miles from Hpa-an along the road to Eindu. From
the stall on Zaydan St in Hpa-an, hop on a pick-up truck to Eindu (K1000) and ask to be
dropped off at Kaw Ka Thawng Cave. A round-trip in a thoun bein or motorcycle taxi
will run K4000 or K5000.
