Eating & Drinking
Daw Yee BURMESE $
(no roman-script sign; off Strand Rd; meals from K2000; 9am-10pm) Simply put, humble
Daw Yee does some of the best Burmese food we've come across in the country. High-
lights of our meal included an insanely fatty prawn curry and a deliciously tart soup of
young tamarind leaves and tiny shrimp. The only downside is locating it; continue south
along Strand Rd until you see Beer Garden 2, then start asking the locals for Daw Yee -
everybody knows it.
Mi Cho Restaurant MUSLIM-BURMESE $
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(no roman-script sign; North Bogyoke Rd; meals from K1500; 10am-9pm) This busy hole-in-
the-wall serves excellent Muslim-style Burmese cuisine, in particular a rich biryani and a
delicious dhal soup. There's no English-language sign here; look for the green awning.
Beer Garden 2 BURMESE $
(58 Strand Rd; meals from K3000; 9am-10.30pm; ) Simply select your vegies and pro-
teins from the refrigerators and staff will slather them with a delicious, spicy sauce and
grill them for you.
May South Indian Chetty Food INDIAN-BURMESE $
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(cnr Strand Rd & Main Kha Lay Kyaung St; meals from K1500; 9am-9pm) This place special-
ises in comically cheap South Indian- influenced 'chetty' set meals: choose your curry
and rice and a seemingly endless succession of soups, dips and other spicy sides will fol-
low.
Grandfather and Grandmother Restaurant CHINESE-BURMESE $
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(Strand Rd; mains K1000-2500; 6.30am-10pm; ) Does what it says on the label; the
money raised at this teashop-cum-restaurant goes to a charity helping the town's elderly.
