On the Mountain
If you want to catch the best light and most enchanting atmosphere at the shrine (and yes,
you do) then you simply have no choice but to stay at one of the four overpriced hotels
near the top.
Mountain Top Hotel HOTEL $$$
( 09 871 8392, in Yangon 01-502 479; grtt@goldenrock.com.mm ; r incl breakfast $100-120;
) Yes, the rooms in the Mountain Top Inn are grossly overpriced, but they're clean and
well maintained, with good service. It is also situated right on the summit of the moun-
tain only a couple of moments' stroll to the shrine complex - an unbeatable position. The
more expensive 'deluxe' rooms have air-con, a TV, a mini bar and great views.
Yoe Yoe Lay Hotel HOTEL $$$
(no roman-script sign; 09 872 3082; www.yoeyoelayhotel.com ; r incl breakfast $80-100; )
Towering over the pilgrims' village north of the boulder, the Yoe Yoe Lay packs a spread
of clean but generally bland and overpriced rooms, some new and claiming great views,
others needing an update. The place is worth seeking out at night when it's lit up like a
gaudy Christmas tree.
Kyaik Hto Hotel HOTEL $$$
( 094 981 9196, in Yangon 01-392 801; www.kyaikhto.com ; r incl breakfast $75-140; ) This
former government-owned hotel is where most package tourists stay. It's unremarkable
and rather institutional-feeling, but has the benefit of being located a short walk from the
Golden Rock. We've come across reports of things missing from rooms here, so take
care to look after your valuables if you choose to stay here.
Golden Rock Hotel HOTEL $$$
( 09 871 8391; grtt@goldenrock.com.mm ; r incl breakfast $80-100; ) The Golden Rock
Hotel, just a few minutes up from the Yatetaung bus terminal, has recently renovated,
comfortable rooms in a secluded-feeling location. The only problem is that its position-
ing - halfway between everywhere but not really anywhere - makes it inconvenient both
for accessing the boulder and food and drink.
