Saung's same-same restaurants, Royal Flower distinguishes itself with the nightly con-
certs by a mellow guitar-playing duo - and you're welcome to join in if you can play or
sing. The grilled fish is excellent.

The closest thing you'll get to seaside dining in the village (the view is distant!), West
Point is nonetheless a breezy and pleasant joint to pick from a menu offering all the usual
seafood, Chinese and Thai offerings as well as Rakhine dishes.

When asked for a good place to eat, most locals
will point you in the direction of this place, located in the middle of the village and larger
than most of its brethren. The prawn curry we sampled was tasty and fresh.

, a cafe-in-
formation centre, is the place to go for local info. Ask for local expert and guide Tom
Tom, who can arrange a day trip or snorkelling excursion, and rents motorcycles. If he's
not here, Tom Tom can also be found at the Shwe Hin Tha Hotel or another Sandalwood
tea shop in the market behind the main village strip (accessed off the road on the left,
heading out of town towards the pagoda).
Getting There & Around
Air-con buses to Yangon (K9000, six hours) leave at 6.30am and 8am. For Pathein
(K3000, two hours), minibuses go at 7am, 8am, 9am, 11am and 3pm. The buses leave
and arrive at the junction between the village and the beach resorts.
Taxis can be arranged for Pathein (K40,000) and Yangon (K110,000).
There are a few trishaws available to carry you between the resorts and the village
(K1000), and motorbikes (with or without a driver) can be hired via Sandalwood or from
some hotels for about K12,000 per day including fuel.
