AROUND YANGON
As well as the excursion to Twante there are several other destinations within Yangon
Region that can easily be done in a day, the most easily organised being to the varied
sights around Thanlyin and Kyauktan. A visit to the Taukkyan War Cemetry can also be
combined with a journey out to the historic town of Bago in neighbouring Bago Region.
If you have more time, a journey southwest into the delta region, properly know as
Ayeyarwady Region, is highly recommended. The landscape - a vast wobbly mat of
greenery floating on a thousand rivers, lakes and tributaries - is stunning. This is one of
the rice bowls of Myanmar, where the farming of the grain continues in the age-old man-
ner. The laid-back and very easily negotiated city of Pathein is the natural base for ex-
ploring.
Should you be looking for nothing more than sand, sea and swaying palms then the re-
sorts of Chaung Tha Beach and Ngwe Saung Beach, lapped by the waves of the Bay of
Bengal, are your answer.
