( 01-525 194; 17A 1st St, Bahan; meals from K2000; 9am-9pm) This longstanding institu-
tion is a great place to sample a wide range of Myanmar food - everything from rich,
meaty curries to light, freshly made salads. The flavours are more subtle here than else-
where, emphasising herbs rather than oil and spice. It's almost constantly busy, but man-
ages to maintain gentle, friendly service and a palpable old-school atmosphere, making
the experience akin to eating at someone's home.

( 01-524 677; 117 Dhama Zedi Rd, Bahan; pizza from K7500; 9am-10pm; ) Ye Htut
Win (aka Sharky) worked in catering for 20 years in Switzerland before returning to Yan-
gon with the dream of making cheese and other quality eats. The result is this gourmet
heaven - part deli, part restaurant serving excellent thin-crust pizza and other dishes with
Sharkey's own fine ingredients. The tempting selection of gelato is reason enough to
make a beeline here.

(Golden Happy Hot Pot; map; 01-559 339; 18 Ko Min Ko Chin St, Dagon; meals from K5000;
10.30am-11pm; ) This vast hall is Yangon's most famous and most popular hot-pot joint.
Join hundreds of other diners in choosing the raw ingredients (starting at K800 for vegt-
ables) from the bank of freezers then cooking them in vats of a spicy Sichuan-style broth
(K2800).
Although it's open during the day it's most fun to come at night when the main dining
hall is packed.
