A century-old wooden mansion has been expertly renovated into
Yangon's most upmarket Shan restaurant. Among the delicious dishes on the menu are a
luscious Mine Tauk aubergine curry and Inlay-style pork curry. Set menus (from
K10,000) include one vegetarian dish.

This long-running operation is a superb place to get your fingers dirty
experimenting with the huge range of tasty Burmese dishes, which are laid out in little
trays that you can just point to. It's very popular at lunchtime with local businesspeople
and foreign embassy staff.

Ask locals where to eat
Burmese food in central Yangon and they'll most likely point you in the direction of this
longstanding shophouse restaurant. All dishes are served with sides of soup du jour (the
sour vegetable soup is particularly good) and
ngapi ye,
a pungent dip served with par-
boiled vegies and fresh herbs.
There's a brief English-language menu, but your best bet is to have a look at the selec-
tion of curries behind the counter.

Our favourite Japanese restaurant is intimate and taste-
ful and seems to have been lifted straight from the Tokyo backstreets of yesteryear. The
food, which covers a wide range of Japanese dishes, is as well presented and highly au-
thentic.
