Meilamu Paya BUDDHIST TEMPLE
(Thudhamar Rd, North Okkalapa; 6am-8pm) Situated next to the Nga Moe Yeik
creek, this Disneyland-ish pagoda is a hoot. Large-than-life 3D stucco depictions of the
Buddha's life and practice litter the compound. Search out the giant crocodile housing a
gallery depicting the legend of Mei La Mu, the girl born from a mangrove fruit, after
whom the temple is named. There are teahouses in the complex overlooking the creek
and you can take a boat across the water to another cluster of stupas.
The temple is a short walk from Tadakalay Station on the Yangon Circle Line.

(68 Kaba Aye Pagoda Rd, Mayagone) This overly glitzy 'world peace' zedi, about 5
miles north of the city centre, was built for the 1954-56 Sixth Buddhist Synod. The
centrepiece is a 118ft-high hollow paya with five gateways, each guarded by an image of
Buddha. In the centre is a statue that has claimed to be the largest Buddha cast from sil-
ver in Myanmar.
Mahapasana CAVE

(Kaba Aye Pagoda Rd, Mayagone; 24hr) Totally artificial, this 'great cave' is where
the Sixth Buddhist Synod was held in 1954-56 to coincide with the 2500th anniversary
