In-Depth Information
Notice the values that were inserted by System Preferences. Of specific interest are the
Wildcard Include Filter and Wildcard Exclude Filter values. The “.*” and “Thumbs.db”
in the Wildcard Exclude Filter prevent the scan from inadvertently picking up files
that aren't supposed to become assets inside Final Cut Server. If you're going to make
your scans manually through the Administration window of the client application, it's
recommended that you mimic this Exclude Filter; otherwise, your Final Cut Server
might fill up with useless assets.
NOTE The reason you exclude “.*” is to avoid accidentally adding any Apple double
files to the catalog. You also exclude “Thumbs.db,” as that file is created by Windows
users browsing subdirectories and is useless if added to the catalog.

certain file extension (as you'll do in the next exercise), you need to create your scan
through the Administration window of the client application.
Click Discard Changes and click Yes to confirm. Close the Administration window,
click Don't Save, and then log out of the client application.

ADMIN
Discovering Video Assets Using Scans
Now that you've seen the differences between adding assets via System Preferences and via
the Administration window, let's clean up the old device and recatalog it via a set of scans
tailored to specific types of media and metadata.
Before you proceed with creating the new filtered scans, you need to clear out what you
did in the previous exercise. The easiest way to do this is to delete the device from the
Final Cut Server pane in System Preferences. This will remove any assets and responses
associated with this device from the catalog but will not touch the high-resolution mate-
rial that resides in the Evergreen folder.
1
Open System Preferences, choose Final Cut Server, and authenticate.
At the top of the Final Cut Server pane, click Devices, select Evergreen, and click the
Delete (-) button to remove the device and any assets, metadata, and automations
associated with it. Read the warning carefully, and then click OK.
