Lesson 4
Creating Assets via
Scans and Watchers
In Lesson 3, you learned how to discover and catalog Final Cut Pro
assets. This lesson takes you through the process of acquiring other
video, graphic, or audio assets that you might have. You'll cover two
Final Cut Server automation features: scans and watchers.
Before you dive into the particulars of using the Final Cut Server dis-
covery methods, let's define some key terms:
A
watcher is a folder that usually resides on the shared folder that
is commonly aliased to a user's desktop and waits for a file to be
dragged to it. Dragging a file to the watcher triggers an automated
set of responses inside Final Cut Server (usually moving the file
dropped in the watcher to another Final Cut Server device).
A
scan is a scheduled process whereby Final Cut Server looks at a
device or a directory, analyzes the content, and modifies the reposi-
tory of assets accordingly. If the scan is configured as an add-only
scan it will add only newly discovered files to the catalog. If the scan
is configured as a purge scan, it removes assets for which the origi-
nal file no longer exists. If the scan is configured as a full scan, it
will do both and also look for modifications in files.
