Willis then rhetorically sank Gondwanaland, which he said “had no actual exist-
ence . . . [and] was the identical line of reasoning of the argument for Continental
Drift. In Suess's imagination, [Gondwanaland] was a reality; but there is . . . no
geologic fact to demonstrate [its] existence.” Willis then lauds Schuchert's imagin-
ary land bridges as a worthy improvement over Gondwanaland, which today we
know once did exist.
