The second confrontation had been between Suess's sunken continents and the
evidence for isostasy, and “in this case, the geologist was wrong.” But of course,
it was the geologist Clarence Dutton who introduced isostasy. Now, according to
Bucher, with the advent of paleomagnetism, a third confrontation between geology
and physics had arisen. Bucher drew his lesson from the first contest, certain that
this time the geologists would win again. Dismissing paleomagnetism, he wrote,
