cient library, known to Eratosthenes, Ptolemy, Euclid, Archimedes, and many other
luminaries from classical antiquity. The original library burned down, probably in the
year 48 BCE at the hands of Julius Caesar's legions, and was rebuilt, at least in part,
before being destroyed at the end of the fourth century. The modern library is a
World Heritage Site.
