In-Depth Information
If you want to track the birthdays of a lot of people, don't add the birthday field by hand for each contact. Instead,
add it to all contacts by customizing the card template to include the birthday field. Choose Card →Add Field →Edit
Template. Use the Add Field list to choose birthday and then close the dialog.
Creating a Smart Group that shows upcoming birthdays
If you start tracking birthdays in Contacts, you still have the problem of remembering when someone's birthday
occurs. To avoid the embarrassment of sending belated birthday greetings, you can get Contacts to remind you
when one or more birthdays are on the horizon.
You do this by setting up a Smart Group that contains only contacts who have upcoming birthdays, for example,
within the next seven days. Here's how it's done:
1. Choose File New Smart Group. You can also press Option+ +N. Contacts displays a dialog so you
can define your Smart Group.
2. Use the Smart Group Name text box to type a name for the new group. For example, you could name
the group Upcoming Birthdays.
3. Use the drop-down list on the left to choose the birthday field.
4. Use the middle drop-down list to select the is in the next operator.
5. Use the text box next to the middle drop-down list to specify the number of days within which you
want the birthdays to fall in order for a contact to be added to this Smart Group.
6. Make sure that you choose days from the drop-down list on the right. Figure 4.5 shows a filled-in
dialog for a Smart Group that looks for contacts who have birthdays within the next seven days.
7. Click OK. Contacts adds the Smart Group to the Group column.
4.5 This Smart Group shows contacts who have birthdays within the next week.
The key here is that when the Contacts application detects a contact whose birthday falls within the timeframe
specified by the group, it adds the contact to the group. Click the Smart Group to see which contact has an up-
coming birthday, as shown in Figure 4.6.
